The International Workshop:

" Human Dimension on the Management of Peatlands in Southeast Asia"

1-2 December 2003, The University of Palangka Raya, Palangka Raya, INDONESIA

Organized by:
Hokkaido University, RC for Biology-LIPI and University of Palangka Raya

The importance of peatland management and research on wetland ecosystem in Southeast Asia is still increasing since the later half of the 20th century. However, some mismanagement of weteland, especially peatland in Southeast Asia during these periods has occurred and has lead to destruction of natural resources and increased degraded land. In order to gather newest scientific information concerning the peatlands of the areas, Hokkaido University and Research Center for Biology, LIPI have collaborated since 1997 to do a cooperative research in Central Kalimantan, Indonesia under a JSPS-LIPI core university program. Some results of the cooperative research during these periods have also pointed out the importance of human dimensions such as socio-economics fields on the management of the peatlands.

Standing on this point of view, in order to gather, discuss and formulate in more accurate the recent findings and opinions concerning the human dimensions on the management of peatlands, The Graduate School of Environmental Earth Science, Hokkaido University, The Research Center for Biology, Indonesian Institute of Sciences, and University of Palangka Raya are planning to organize a workshop.

Topics to be discussed on the workshop are:
1. Education, on environment and regional management
2. Culture and social system

4. Land use and regional economics
